Certified Internal Control Auditor, MBA, CSOE, Vitalics Consultant, Internal Control Examiner

[/text_tc][/column_tc][column_tc span=’5′][text_tc timing=’linear’ trigger_pt=’0′ duration=’1000′ delay=’0′]

Mike DeAndrea, MBA, CICA, CSOE, is a small business internal controls and bookkeeping professional who is dedicated to helping clients protect their profits and safeguard their businesses through sound bookkeeping and effective internal financial control monitoring.[nbsp_tc]

For over thirty years, Mike has designed and implemented accounting processes for small businesses, analyzed and documented accounting systems for large corporations, and managed the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) internal control compliance efforts for Scripps Networks, the parent company of HGTV, Food Network, and a host of other lifestyle media networks, websites, and magazines.

Mike holds a B.A. in Science and Mathematics from Marylhurst University and an M.B.A in General Business Administration from California Coast University.[nbsp_tc] He also holds certifications from the Institute for Internal Controls as a Certified Internal Controls Auditor (CICA) and from the Sarbanes-Oxley Certified Professionals Association as a Certified Sarbanes-Oxley Expert (CSOE).[nbsp_tc] He is dedicated to protecting small businesses from losses due to fraud, theft, embezzlement, and other internal threats.

Mike began his career as a Chemical Engineering Technician at Calgon Corporation, discovered that he had a talent for demystifying complex processes, and transitioned into Technical Writing where he worked first as a technical writer, then as a technical publications manager, and eventually as the founder and CEO of his own full-service Technical Writing business.[nbsp_tc] Following a 15-year successful career in technical writing, he retired early to Palm Springs with his wife and children.

Shortly afterwards, he was enticed out of retirement with an invitation to join Scripps Networks as their Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) documentation manager.[nbsp_tc] Since the SOX legislation had just been passed in the wake of the Enron and similar financial scandals of the early 2000’s, and since he knew people whose pensions had been wiped out by the Enron fraud, he accepted the offer and began a second career that spanned another ten years and focused on protecting people’s pensions from corporate fraud.

During this time, he played progressively impactful roles, first as the SOX documentation manager, then as the SOX Compliance Administration Manager, and finally as the Enterprise IT Portfolio Manager where he developed internal control metrics to track spending for a budget in excess of $100 Million. At the beginning of 2015, Mike return to Palm Springs with his wife to be closer to their grandchildren.[nbsp_tc] In a chance conversation with his daughter, who owns a bookkeeping company in Seattle, he realized that small businesses are even more vulnerable to internal threats[nbsp_tc] — things like fraud, theft, and embezzlement – than the large corporations that he had helped to protect for the past decade.[nbsp_tc] A little research showed that small businesses lose up to 5% of their revenue annually on average and over $5 Billion nationally.[nbsp_tc]

Realizing that these losses could be greatly reduce by implementing even a modest system of internal control, Mike resolved to leverage his extensive experience in internal control design to help small business owners protect their profits and safeguard their financial assets.[nbsp_tc] [nbsp_tc]He launched his new consultancy business in April, 2016 to bring the power and protection of internal controls to small businesses in a way that is highly confidential, non-intrusive, and readily affordable.
